Dr. Manosi Lahiri is a Professional Geographer. She
is the Founder and Chief Executive of ML Infomap, the first GIS company of India.
Dr. Lahiri holds a MSc degree from University of London and
PhD from University of Delhi. She is a certified GIS instructor and software programmer.
She taught Geography at Kirori Mal College, Delhi and trained in Digital Mapping
and GIS at Durham University, UK. She led the first major state level GIS project
in India, The Bihar GIS, from 1989 to 1992.
In 1993, Dr. Lahiri founded ML Infomap, a Geographic Information
company. ML Infomapís focus has been to use Information Technology and location
information to solve business and development problems. The companyís clients are
in the logistics, defence, research, development, telecom and retail sectors.
In recognition of Dr. Lahiriís professional contributions,
she has been awarded the 'Life Time Achievement Award' at Map India 2010 by Geospatial
Media and Communications (formerly, GIS Development). She has authored the industry
whitepaper: Survey and Mapping @ Crossroads. This important document studies the
impact of government policies and regulations on the GIS industry in India, and
suggests review of them.
Dr. Lahiri is the author of several books. Her published works
include The Bihar GIS (1993); Here Be Yaks: Travels in Far West Tibet (2006) and
Mapping India (2012), a 500
years cartographic history of the country. She has contributed to The Times History
of The World in Maps (2015) and forthcoming History of Cartography Volume V, University
of Chicago Press. She is Vice-President of Survey And Mapping Association and represents
India at the International Map Collectors Society.
